The Democratic Party has today concluded a two days nomination process leading to the identification of the Party’s flag bearer in the forthcoming elections of the East Africa Legislative Assembly representatives to take place next year April, the process started by interested Party members picking the nomination forms that was commenced last week on 9th November, 2021.

By close of business today, three candidates had returned their forms and were duly nominated to participate in the internal party primary election. The committee that was headed by the Deputy Secretary General Owek. Christine Mugerwa Kasule, the National Organizing Secretary of the Party Herbert Rutagwera and the DP Electoral Commission Chairperson Kennedy Mutenyo received the candidates and undertook to ensure that they meet all the requirements as stipulated in the guidelines.

The process has been handled carefully well by the team espousing utmost level of fairness and transparency. Speaking to Egumire, Owek. Christine Mugerwa Kasule who heads the team stated that DP members should arrest their fear because the process is being handled by impartial members who have no interest in the process, as such transparency and fairness shall be ensured concomitantly with truth and justice.

The nominated candidates include Hon. Faith Namusana Akiteng former DP parliamentary contestant for Ngora district, Hon. Babirye Kabanda former DP parliamentary candidate for Masaka City who also doubles as the Treasurer General of the party and Hon. Gerald Siranda Blacks Lucas a former DP parliamentary candidate for Pallisa County also serving as the Secretary General of DP

Today being the day on which the Party weekly press conferences are held, a press conference was held before the nomination was started. In the press conference the party called for fairness in the distribution of the nine(9) slots that Uganda has in the East Africa Legislative Assembly. It was emphasized that in a democracy there is no bigness therefore these slots must be distributed equally among political shades with representation in parliament.

The process went on smoothly with contestants and their supporters maintaining the highest level of discipline. Each candidate was given an opportunity to address the media after nomination.

Democratic Party National Campaign Command Center was flooded with members of DP who danced to the sweet Party songs. It was exciting for members to see DP practicing the democratic principles onto which it stands and preached for close to seven decades now. Congratulations to the candidates, let the best candidate win!

Vehicles that made Hon. Babirye Kabanda’s convoy on the nomination day parked outside the nomination venue on Balintuma Road.

All the candidates received a list of contact phone numbers of voters who are members of the National Executive Committee of the Party and were flagged off officially to look for votes. This internal election process will be concluded on December 11th, 2021 when members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) shall convene and cast their votes. Whoever shall be voted will officially be the flag bearer of the Party.
